AbstractIntended as part of a continuing commercial art program, the basic course outlined provides the high school student with a core of skills and knowledge common to many of the commercial art jobs. The first part of the course is designed to acquaint the exploratory student with some of the procedures and skills required. Units 1 through 5 cover foundation of drawing, use of rubber cement, introduction to tools and equipment, introduction to lettering, and introduction to kinds of work done in the commercial art field. Units in the second part of the course, for the student expressing vocational interest in the field are: developing proficiency in use of production artist's tools, introduction to color theory, basic drawing, speedball lettering styles, introduction to visual design, and introduction to layout. Objectives for each part of the course are listed. Formats for the lessons within each unit are of two types: (1) a teaching lesson with objectives, introduction, procedure, application, performance criteria, and list of materials needed and (2) assignment sheet with directions and performance criteria. Illustrations are used extensively throughout the text. Appended are a course orientation for the student and a bibliography. (RG)
