AbstractA conference of primarily black college presidents and of heads of foundations and agencies, which are devoted to the strengthening of black colleges and higher education for blacks, focused on the role of black colleges beyond 1975, discussing critical issues confronted by black colleges, including legal, economic, education, leadership, and political. In this summary report of the conference content, private and public black colleges are examined separately followed by a statement of consensus that developed around the following priorities for black colleges as a national resource: (1) training of black and non-black students; (2) strengthening the black community; (3) sharing resources and common goals with Third World Nations; (4) development of major centers of research and development affecting the quality of life; (5) fostering pluralism; (6) meeting the challenge of new, untapped manpower needs in academic and professional spheres and in public/social policy; (7) education of poor and disadvantaged; (8) producing models of black leadership; (9) functioning as purveyors of black cultural heritage; and (10) training to meet critical manpower needs, e.g., in international diplomacy and law, health professions, and community conversation. Some recommendations are included for implementing the above priorities. The report includes summary discussion on What is a black college? Why were they founded? What did they do? and characteristics and clientele. (JT)
