Abstract | This workbook is designed to serve primarily as an information-gathering device and educational tool for citizens interested in eliminating sexism in public elementary and secondary schools. Although it is not intended specifically for use by school administrators, school officials may find it a useful self-evaluation guide for identifying and correcting discriminatory policies and practices. Chapter 1 summarizes legal provisions prohibiting sex discrimination in education and discusses possible alternatives for persuading or compelling a school district to comply with legal requirements. Chapter 2 discusses from both practical and legal points of view how to obtain various school materials and data necessary for monitoring compliance. Chapters 3 and 4 consist of checklists and other documents for use in determining whether a school district is meeting its obligations under Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 and related state regulations. Portions of the workbook specifically address situations in New Jersey and may not be applicable elsewhere; however, most of the content will be equally useful to citizens in other states.
