Abstract | Designed to demonstrate how "Focus on Man", the social studies guide for Utah teachers, can be revised to include accurate and empathetic treatment of the Native American. this document cites inaccurate statements, presents the rationale for change, and provides examples of how to correct inaccuracies. Specifically, this study deals with the following: (1) Native American terms (Native American; Native American education; Bureau of Indian Affairs; anglo, Caucasian, European, white; tribes; reservation; Native American organizations); (2) a generalized rationale for change (deals with questionable activities frequently found in primary and intermediate grades such as: building "Indian Villages" in the sand table from materials not used by Native Americans; making "wardrums" and planning "Indian War Dances" from the children's own imaginations; role playing "life in an Indian community" when children have not observed life in this situation); (3) a model unit for junior high school students featuring aspects of Native American history and political science (Social Goal One from "Focus on Man"--dignity and worth of the individual; social roles development--individual and leadership; motivation--self and peers; behavioral objectives and rationale; pretest; activities; and post-test); (4) suggested revisions to Social Goal One (statements, revisions, and rationale).
