AbstractThe growing conflict between what society demands and what education offers is discussed with regard to alternatives to traditional post-secondary education. It is suggested that the whole area of school subjects, jobs, and careers must be re-defined and explored in greater depth. New research designs are needed to make the relationship relevant for students from their earliest years. Various changes are suggested and projections for specific job opportunities are made. New forms of learning that are available technologically are outlined: satellite, learning centers, new learning modules, service-learning, pre-accreditation for University Without Walls program, self-directed study groups. The future of post-secondary education is concluded to be shaped by a unique convergence of social, psychological, political, and economic forces. (LBH)
