AbstractThe Memphis City School System was notified by Memphis Light, Gas, and Water that it was necessary to reduce its consumption of natural gas during the winter of 1975-76. A survey was developed and sent to 44 large public school systems to determine which methods of heating energy conservation were used most frequently and which methods were most successful. Completed surveys have been received from 31 (70 percent) of the school systems. The three most frequently used methods of heating energy conservation were (1) reduce building temperatures during holiday periods, (2) place stronger emphasis on proper maintenance of heating equipment, and (3) reduce building temperature. The four methods of heating energy conservation that were perceived as highly successful were the above first two plus (3) switch to night heating cycle before school closes for the day, and (4) schedule custodial care during the day instead of night.
