| Abstract | This document on Canadian communication theory is divided into four major sections. The first section examines the work of Harold Innis as a distinctively Canadian effort to establish a theory of communications that is true to the realities of Canadian existence and yet is applicable to the history of communication in other parts of the world. The second section discusses time-binding versus space-binding communication. Time and space are defined as short distance and long distance communication, and they are discussed in terms of communications technology. The third section examines monopolistic versus pluralistic communication and discusses Innis' notion of a monopoly of knowledge, which argues that communication by its nature possesses a bias which can be dangerous if centralized. The fourth section of this document examines the basic intention of Innis' work in terms of his position as an historian. (TS) |
