Abstract	The role of the university in national development, the relationship between undergraduate and graduate instruction, the value and place of interdisciplinary studies, and the interconnections between academic objectivity and moral purpose are discussed. The paper was delivered for an Indonesian audience but universal problems are addressed. Further consideration is given to equity and employment, development of regional universities, problem oriented education, curriculum reform, citizen employability, and the learning capacity of a nation.
