Abstract | This paper provides a description of a program designed to teach responsible drinking practices in a college student population. The aim of this program is to prevent problem drinking or alocholism in students who report concern about their drinking behavior, and volunteer to participate in a treatment-prevention program aimed at controlling their drinking patterns and rates. It is not recommended for those individuals who might be diagnosed as alcoholic, but only for those who show developing signs of a drinking problem, and who reject the requirement of total abstinence as a treatment goal. Research is presented which provides background support for the prevention program, based on a behavioral model of drinking behavior. A number of specific treatment techniques are described as components of the program, including aversion therapy, assertive training, blood-alcohol level discrimination training, and relaxation training. This paper provides only an overview and description of the program, and no follow-up data are presented. (Author) |
