Abstract | This sourcebook is the result of a week-long conference of about 50 "Study Abroad Advisors" held in 1974. The workshop and the sourcebook are the first steps toward professionalizing the field of advising U.S. students who wish an overseas experience. The sourcebook is designed as a complement to the Council on International Educational Exchange's guidelines on developing campus services for students going overseas. The sourcebook discusses the purpose of studying abroad, the roles of the advisor as they relate to the student and university administration, various details on overseas programs, the role of language in an Experience Abroad, program evaluation and transfer of credits, financial aid, orientation for U.S. students before departure, and personal and academic readjustment after returning from abroad. Finally, the book includes appendices which list the names of the workshop participants, important addresses, additional sources of information on travel and work abroad, and various other guidelines and materials that were used in the workshop.
