AbstractThis report on ghetto social structure, surveying a sample of 120 black women from Boston, is an examination of the extent to which black urbanites maintain personal ties within the ghetto area. Nine chapters listed as follows constitute the document: social organization in the black ghetto; Boston-the city and the sample, primary social ties, voluntary associations, tertiary participation, the relationship between social integration indices, income, status, and social participation, and a summary with conclusions. The sample interviewed was said not to fit into the stereotype of the isolated ghetto dweller who has no concern for, or contact with his or her fellow residents. It pointed to the importance of both the kinship system and that of other primary ties such as friends and neighbors. Two logical and important extensions to this urban network research are said to include a study of the social networks moving out beyond the individual black respondent and her immediate circle of friends and relatives, and a controlled longitudinal mobility research study of black families in alternate housing--with an interview before the move and followed by a series of repeated interviews subsequent to the move.
