AbstractTo determine teachers' attitudes (and reasons for these attitudes) toward the language of children in their schools, 33 teachers in selected infant and junior schools in England and a similar number in the United States representing a cross-section of schools and geographic areas in the two countries were interviewed. More than 90 percent of the teachers in both countries perceived the language of children from working-class homes in England and lower socioeconomic groups in the United States as being deficient in some way for six main reasons. The attribution of linguistic deprivation to children and the reasons revealed by the teachers to explain such deprivation seem to be of sufficient dimensionality and persistence to constitute consistent stereotypic behavior in evaluating the language of children. Conclusions and recommendations of this study relate to the teaching of language and to the preparation of teachers in relation to the effect teachers' attitudes have on their evaluations of children's learning potentials, their intellectual capacities, and their communicative competence.
