AbstractThe report describes the development of the Youth Training in the Private Sector Model for conducting on-the-job training for high school age youth. It is based on a two-year study of the Vocational Exploration in the Private Sector (VEPS) Program in New York City, which placed potential dropouts in work/training positions in the private sector and paid a portion of their wages. The first section of the report examines the VEPS program, stating program objectives and describing, assessing, and discussing observed deviations from program guidelines for both of the program's two years. Section two of the report presents the recommendations for the Youth Training in the Private Sector Model with respect to: administrative structure and staff, selection of youth, job development and responsibility of private sector employers, pre-placement orientation, work training and experience, counseling and employer contact, and career exploration sessions. Over 100 pages of the report contain appended material covering a sample orientation program, a sample vocational exploration program, sample forms and materials, and a bibliography of vocational exploration materials and equipment.
