AbstractThis study presents results from the last year of a three-year adjunctive evaluation of classroom process measurement and pupil growth. A total of 289 classrooms involving eight experimental programs, ranging from open classrooms to contingency management classes, along with a comparison sample, were observed. Four observation instruments were used; two were coded during the classroom observation, and two were coded from audio tape. Factor scores were calculated for each set of observation data and used to test discrimination between programs. The scores were also related to classroom mean pupil regressed gain which had been scored to identify different levels of complexity. Observation was successful in discriminating between programs, with 33 of 39 factors significant. Results indicated that classroom measures and pupil gain showed more significant relationship with skill than with abstract or concrete growth. Although there were inconsistencies, gain in skill was related to greater amounts of (a) focus, (b) drill, (c) convergence, (d) structured activity with the teacher and time spent on reading, and (e) lesser amounts of pupil freedom.
