Abstract | The curriculum guide was designed to develop within adult education a career education model program for Louisiana and to help teachers, counselors, and administrators in planning and implementing creative and innovative activities in the field of career awareness and exploration. This collection of recommended ideas, activities, and procedures covering primarily language arts, reading, and mathematics with one unit in English composition, is to be used in conjunction with the teacher's own plans. The 10-part guide introduces and defines career education and the central goals (increased awareness of the need to learn, an opportunity to acquire skills, an understanding of opportunities and available careers, and adaptability). The major concepts (self, career, society, economics, and technilogy) and subconcepts are defined. The four general units, divided into approximately six lessons, cover finding employment, keeping a job, helping oneself, and handling finances. Each lesson is organized into eight sections under the unit topic, subject area, concept and subconcept headings: performance objective, activities, teacher preparation, vocabulary, suggested resource persons and field trips, subject matter tie-ins, and evaluation. Blank units, selected references, a list of free and inexpensive materials, and suggested materials for teaching units supplement the guide. (JB) |
