| Abstract | This collection of papers begins with a position paper by L.F. Helbig describing the German studies movement and its implementation to date. V. Lange contributes a survey of German studies in America. Two papers by E. Herlitzius and H.D. Schaefer discuss the role of national economic planning and of higher education in the German Democratic Republic. The other papers demonstrate the interdisciplinary focus of German studies: (1) "Convergence, Ostpolitik and the Berlin Accords" by J.E. Smith, (2) "Social Change in the FRG and the GDR" by P.C. Ludz, (3) "German Government and Politics from the Textbook Author's Viewpoint" by J.H. Herz, (4) "Competition in Miracles?--How to Study the Postwar Development of the German Economies" by H.D. Renning, (5) "The Bundeswehr: A New Phase in Civil-Military Relations in the Federal Republic of Germany" by H.P. Secher, (6) "Education as Change Agent and Change Object in the Two Germanies" by R.F. Lawson, (7) "Teaching Postwar German Culture--An Undisciplined Discipline" by G.H. Weiss, (8) "A Reader on Postwar Germany for American Students--Some Preliminary Thoughts" by W. Koepke, and (9) "GDR Literature--A Literature of Conflict and Dissent" by M. Eifler.
