| Abstract | Choosing a course of study for their fourth and fifth years of secondary education is a major decision facing pupils at 13 years of age (and over), and is one which may have far-reaching consequences. Helping students at this time presents schools with a major challenge, and the importance of educational and vocational guidance is becoming increasingly recognized. This report is concerned with examining the choice structure and the guidance procedures in five comprehensive schools in England and Wales, and evaluating how they work. Extensive information is presented in the following areas: (1) educational guidance and subject choice; (2) curriculum organization and pupil decision making; (3) pupils and their choices and attitudes; and (4) parent role and attitudes.
