Abstract | The material in this extensive resource book was compiled to assist teachers in working with Adult Basic Education students in the area of social and personal development. The material was gathered from a variety of sources for use by a variety of teachers with a variety of students; therefore, teachers should not be expected to teach everything in the book to every student. This book contains a collection of "starters" to make small group work deeper and more effective for participants. Because no attempt has been made to impose a schedule or specific approach to the group experience, group leaders must choose what will work for them and for their particular group. Some of the designated lessons require that the leader have training in small group work, relevant additional course work and experience in human relations groups, The six broad categories into which the manual is divided include: (1) personal skills; (2) human relations; (3) money, Management and family life; (4) health education; (5) community and leisure; and (6) citizenship and government.
