AbstractThe failure of classroom practices to alter to accommodate concepts and concept learning prompted this attempt to identify a strategy for selecting and organizing content and instruction for learning home economics concepts and generalizations. Basic elements of the strategy are: (1) a statement of rationale including the broad goals of the program, (2) selection and organization of concepts, (3) translation of goals into instructional objectives, (4) selection and organization of instruction, and (5) concurrent development of a program for systematic evaluation. Emphasis is placed on learning in the cognitive domain although affective learning and skills are also important. Application of the strategy by teacher-graduate students provided the opportunity to assess its value in selecting and organizing home economics content and instruction. Teachers were helped by several aspects of the strategy, including: working with flow charts, relating the general and specific in content areas, distinguishing between instruction and content, relating instructional methods to goals, selecting media, and goals for instruction. The use of the strategy as a framework for curriculum planning and in studying ways to integrate home economics subject matter areas is recommended. A bibliography is appended. (SA)
