| Abstract | In the last few years, as enrollments in foreign languages have stabilized, and have even begun to show substantial recoveries, the number of study-abroad programs available to American students has increased. Any teacher considering participation in one of these programs as faculty director should ask himself serious questions about his own qualifications. There are basically two types of study-abroad programs, the commercially organized so-called "study tours," with no academic affiliation, and the academic programs offered under the auspices of some educational institution. For either type of program, a very special kind of person is needed. The effective program director must have the following characteristics: (1) good business sense, (2) travel experience, (3) fluent control of the language, (4) love of people, (5) willingness to subordinate one's own desires to those of the group, (6) flexibility, (7) companionableness, and (8) emotional strength.
