AbstractAn attempt was made to compare two instructional techniques. The study involved 64 students in two experimental groups and 65 as controls. Two instructional treatments (scripts and tapes) and two units of biological subject matter were utilized. One experimental group was given audio tapes, the other written scripts for the first unit. In the second unit the treatment was reversed. Pre- and posttests were given for each unit. Reading ability, student attitude toward the technique used and subject matter presented were studied by the investigator. The relationship of scholastic ability to achievement, using the two treatments, was examined. A significant difference favoring script instruction was found for achievement in the developmental biology unit. None was found in achievement as observed between tape and script groups for the unit in genetics. Attitudes toward the treatments differed significantly, with favorability given to the treatment given first, regardless of achievement or expediency in time when using the treatment. Both groups favored the multi-method approach. It was felt that scholastic aptitude is directly related to achievement, and, regardless of treatment given, people with high aptitude will do well.
