| Abstract | This report deals with the finances of about 15,800 school districts that exist as separate units of local government. It presents data on revenue, expenditures, indebtedness and debt transactions, cash and security holdings, district size, and recent trends. Data are presented on a State by State basis with information for areas within standard metropolitan statistical areas shown separately. Summary financial amounts also appear for school districts that reported an enrollment of 3,000 or more pupils in October 1971. The financial statistics reported are based mainly on information received in response to a mail canvass covering all school districts in the United States. The data collected indicate that school district government in the United States received $39.3 billion in revenue and made expenditures totaling $39.1 billion during the fiscal year 1971-72. They issued $2.1 billion and paid off $1.5 billion in long-term debt. At the end of the fiscal year, their total indebtedness amounted to $25.3 billion. Revenue of school districts was 73 percent greater in fiscal 1971-72 than in 1966-67. More than half of all school district expenditures are for salaries and wages. These expenditures totaled $26.1 billion in fiscal 1971-72, or 75 percent more than 5 years earlier. (Author/DN) |
