Abstract | The contents of this concept paper examining the roll of the mass media in the socialization of minority groups in America include an examination of the major literature dealing with the socialization of minority groups, a discussion of subculture orientation to minority socialization, consideration of the theories of ethnocentrism and their relationships to the socialization process; examination of the mass media literature related to minority group socialization, and a discussion and outline of needed research for building toward a theory of the media's role in minority socialization. The theoretic schemes presented here help to visualize the process of changing the thinking structures of a culture and provide a solution to the problem of extreme ethnocentrism. (RB) |
