AbstractAn internship is required of doctoral programs in vocational-technical education programs funded under Section 552 of the Education Professions Development Act; the programs of the 11 original EPDA 552 institutions were investigated, and the results are presented. The historical background of internship in the United States is developed in a 25-page section, appended by a 10-page annotated bibliography. On-site visitations to the 11 institutions disclosed wide variations, particularly in the area of implementation (financial remuneration, course credit, student role in negotiating, advisor role, and orientation); the section is 25 pages. A 68-page indepth evaluation of the internship at Rutgers University indicates that there is general support for the internship concept; further study of the relationship of the internship to career goals is required. Guidelines for the 30-page Internship Manual, which contains suggestions for the implementation and evaluation of an internship program, were formulated from an analysis and synthesis of these data. Among the recommendations contained in the 40-page summary are that the internship component be continued after termination of EPDA 552 projects, but with evaluation provisions. (AJ)
