Abstract | This three-chapter manual provides a national picture of certification and accreditation requirements. Chapter 1 provides a summary of standards and practices in teacher education, certification, and accreditation. Also included are data collected from a survey questionnaire on standards and requirements in effect in 1973. A summary of responses from the participating state directors of teacher education and certification include the following topics: (a) personnel required by state law or regulation to hold a certificate; (b) minimum requirements for elementary and secondary school teachers; (c) advanced preparation required; (d) academic, special subject, and general requirements; (e) approved-program approach; (f) reciprocity; (g) governance; (h) accountability; (i) requirements for administrators; and (j) auxiliary school personnel. Chapter 2 contains a state-by-state listing of certification requirements for teachers, supervisors, administrators, and special school service personnel. Chapter 3 includes the following tabular data: (a) classification of approved teacher education institutions according to function and control; (b) standards used by states for approval of teacher education; (c) number of approved teacher education institutions and types of approval/accreditations; (d) classification of approved teacher education institutions according to highest education degree offered; and (e) a state-by-state listing of approved teacher education institutions, types of accreditation, and types of programs and degree levels for which approved.
