Abstract | Compared were attitudinal characteristics and achievement in a college chemistry course offered by two different instructional methods. The experimental group received closed-circuit television instruction, and the control group was instructed by lecture and recitation. All students were pretested with the American Chemical Society-National Science Teachers Association (ACS-NSTA) Cooperative High School Chemistry Examination, Form 1971, and classified into ability levels. An analysis of covariance was used to analyze the achievement data. Higher level students excelled, regardless of treatment. No significant differences were found in achievement with either instructional method, nor was there a significant interaction between ability level and method of instruction. Using a Likert type attitude questionnaire, with the use of a t-test for analysis, no significant differences in attitude between the groups were identified. Instruction in general chemistry by closed-circuit television appeared to be as effective as lecture-recitation for students of both higher and lower ability. (Author/EB) |
