AbstractForeign workers, particularly those who have been in Austria for a long time, are already included in training and other educational programs promoted by the labour market administration. Regulated by a 1972 decree of the Federal Ministry of Social Administration, vocational training of foreign workers is steadily gaining in importance in Austria, especially since 90 percent of the Yugoslav and Turkish immigrants are unskilled. The paramount difficulty in integrating migrants is the lack of linguistic communication, aggravated by serious social influences. Some measures that could be taken are extended social care, linguistic education, and informing the Austrian population of the necessity of employing guest workers. Considering pre-school students, children of full-time compulsory school age, and young people over 15, generally it can be said that contacts between schools and guest workers are very small. The adjustment difficulties that children have because of social problems are aggravated by an insufficient command of German. Additional difficulties arise with children who either arrive as illiterates or know only the Cyrillic alphabet. For reasons of principle, however, no plans are being made to create separate classes for these children, they are accepted on the same basis as Austrians. (KM)
