AbstractThe study prepares the ground for the introduction of a language learning system for adults. Part 1 presents a draft outline of such a system, in which the language material to be learned is organized into units and credits awarded on the completion of each unit. The content is defined with reference to the nature of the learners and their linguistic needs, and organized in a situational, rather than a conventional grammatical, syllabus, so that each learner will be free to follow units relevant to his purposes. Part 2 offers a model for the definition of the language needs of adults and an analytical classification of the categories of adults needing to learn foreign languages. Part 3 contains an analysis of the problems in defining operationally a basic competence level and a proposal for such a definition, presenting in detail behavioral specifications and content specifications. Part 4 exemplifies the situational and linguistic content of the common grammatical core identified by the authors. (AJ)
