Abstract | This paper discusses a new structure for understanding the communication process--a structure that reflects the trend toward reorganizing knowledge along the lines suggested by an ecological perspective. The paradigms that exist in the field of communication are discussed, and the inability of most of them to cope with the full range of communication transactions that researchers want to know something about is pointed out. The metaphor presented for the new structure for understanding the communication process considers all communication to be an environment. Also presented are illustrations of how context analysis works--the method of identifying the significant characteristics as a whole, the subsystems of which it is composed, the larger system within which it functions, and all the significant relationships among them. Finally, the speaker presents questions related to how media environments work. (WR) |
