| Abstract | At the 17th General Conference the UNESCO Member States decided unanimously to promote worldwide action in favor of books and reading by maintaining the impetus of the International Book Year 1972. They adopted the four themes of the book year as long term objectives and set out suggestions for action for each of the themes, which are: (1) books in the service of educational understanding and peaceful cooperation; (2) encouragement of authorship and translation, with due regard to copyright; (3) production and distribution of books, including the development of libraries; and (4) promotion of the reading habit. The suggested actions may be implemented by existing National Book Development Councils, existing international organizations, and by UNESCO itself. The "Resolution on International Book Year 1972 and its sequal adopted by the General Conference of UNESCO" is appended. (LS) |
