AbstractReported is a study primarily concerned with isolating variables that are most significant in allowing a prospective teacher to superimpose an interest in elementary children on top of an already existing interest in science. Case studies were developed on five MAT candidates in an attempt to find out what happened to them as they interacted with elementary school students, and later reflected on their experiences. Data were gathered on their backgrounds, attitudes and assumptions about elementary school children, about themselves as teachers, the place of science in the schools, their teaching styles, and certain major personality variables. It was noted that all had decided against pursuing doctoral studies in the sciences. They had negative feelings about doing scientific research. They all saw themselves as being strongly people-oriented which contributed to their being attracted to teaching. In choosing the elementary level, they indicated that they found these children pleasing to work with. Their hesitations and objections seemed to revolve around their degree of intellectual involvement with science, and thus, with the priorities they had set for themselves as teachers. Evidence showed that their summers' experiences and their own priorities led them to be intrigued and somewhat attracted to elementary teaching. (Author/EB)
