AbstractReported is a study to identify various methods of conducting laboratory programs of experimental inquiry into problems of physics and to determine the effects on performance test scores of three groups of students (elementary education majors). The curricula programs developed were: (1) a laboratory curriculum of self-directed programs of inquiry; (2) a manual-directed program of inquiry; and (3) an instructor-directed program of inquiry. An analysis of variance examination was made on each of three tests administered to each of the three experimental groups. No significant differences existed between the mean test scores on the pretest but were identified on the posttests favoring the instructor-directed group. This was also evidenced on a delayed posttest analysis. It was concluded that the role and importance of the laboratory instructor goes beyond the practice of maintenance of and direction in the use of equipment. His role should include instruction relative to and demonstration of objectives of the experimental program. It was suggested that for a short term laboratory experience there is a weakness in always leaving the student to self-discovery of answers to experimental problems. (Author/EB)
