AbstractThe study examines definitions of Outdoor Education (OE) and similar terms, and identifies the objectives of such programs in Resident Outdoor Schools to determine their educational purposes. The study is limited to a review of OE literature published between 1968-73 in the U.S. Definitions are those stated by arbitrarily selected people and organizations with an interest or background in OE. Analysis of the definitions (in context) shows that to varying degrees they attempt to describe: (1) the place where OE should occur; (2) the methods that OE employs; and (3) its content and goals. OE, according to stated objectives, is concerned with skill, knowledge, and attitudes, some of which are identical to those aimed at by other educational programs and others which appear to be unique to OE and in particular to residential programs. There are some objectives which do not fall into these categories--these describe some individual OE processes and other positive attributes that are desirable outcomes. Also included are personal comments after each analysis of definitions and objectives; a personal point of view of what OE could be; 2 appendices; and a bibliography listing. (FF)
