Abstract	The purpose of this study was to determine the status of adult and continuing education and other nontraditional study programs of a public service nature that currently exist within the 560 colleges and university members of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and to develop a new standard for evaluation and accreditation for use as a guideline by the member institutions in developing these types of programs. It may be concluded from the study that institutions of higher education in the sourthern region are aware of the need for public service programs, are interested in relating their expertise to contemporary societal needs, and are willing to become involved by developing new and innovative programs. However, based on the findings of this study, it is evident that, to date, the institutions have not fully accepted the challenge of public service, have not incorporated the necessary administrative units into their administrative organization with appropriate resource allocation, and have not given to adult, continuing, and extension education the appropriate status, equal to other components of the institutions, to insure and safeguard the quality of these programs.
