AbstractThis publication presents the results of research conducted in Australian secondary schools as a part of the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) Science Project. The aim of the project was to investigate relationships between the science achievement of secondary students and various home, student, school, and teacher factors. About 9,500 secondary school students from six Australian states were tested in 1970 by the Australian Council for Educational Research. The samples included students from government, Catholic and independent schools in both the metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas. The report sets out, in graphical form, the school mean scores of the Australian schools that participated in the project on five variables: (1) total science test, (2) test of understanding of science, (3) science activities and interest scale, (4) word knowledge test, and (5) like school scale. The data are presented by individual states, and the correlations between the variables are analyzed and discussed. Since the same tests were administered to samples of students in 17 other countries, some direct comparisons may now be made between science education in Australia and other IEA countries. (JR)
