AbstractThe purpose of this study was to prepare a chronological history of the objectives for teaching chemistry in the high schools of the United States during the period 1918-1967, as reflected in selected professional periodicals. The period 1918-1967 was divided into six subperiods and the literature was searched for statements of objectives of secondary school chemistry teaching. These statements were categorized as knowledge, process, attitude and interest, or cultural awareness and the resulting categories were further subdivided into 18 distinct objective types. Statements of the 18 objective types were classified as to frequency of occurrence, category, authorship, and year of publication within each subperiod and across all subperiods to serve as indicators of preference. A number of conclusions were drawn from the data collected. One such conclusion indicated that the emphasis shifted from the knowledge category during subperiods 1-3 (1918-1946), through attitude and interest during subperiods 4 and 5 (1945-1962), to almost equal concern for all categories in subperiod 6 (1963-1967).
