AbstractThe purpose of this study was to investigate attempts to modify teachers' verbal behavior characterized as direct by the Flanders' system of interaction analysis. An initial observation showed that out of 12 teachers, 3 were indirect and 9 were direct. Three groups were determined: Group I, 3 indirect teachers (control); Group II, 4 direct teachers (control); and Group III, 5 randomly selected direct teachers (experimental). Students were selected for each teacher by computer assignment. Each teacher in Group III was observed three times, and given the results of the observations along with instruction in indirect influence patterns during three conferences with the investigator. Results showed that on a continuum from .56 to 2.50, the teachers in Group III moved up so that their mean Indirect/Direct ratio did not differ significantly with those in Group I; that Group III became more indirect in their influence patterns but failed to reach the point of indirectness of Group I; and that Group III failed to move up the continuum so that there was a measurable significant difference between them and the teachers of Group II.
