AbstractTo assess the effectiveness of a 3-month inservice program in vocational education for high school counselors, data were gathered from 60 non-college bound students (experimental group) whose counselors participated in the 3-month program and 60 non-college bound students (Control group) whose counselors did not participate in the program. Pre- and post-data on selected affective and cognitive behaviors were gathered from the 120 students immediately before or within the first week of the inservice training and immediately after termination of training. Data analysis revealed that there were no significant differences between the two groups, except in one of the cognitive measures in which the experimental group demonstrated greater growth by being able to correctly identify the education or training required by an occupation. The inadequacy of the present vocational counseling and guidance service offered secondary students was supported by these results: (1) Less than 60 percent of either group were able to identify a career choice, (2) Less than half of those who did identify a career choice were able to identify or describe the job cluster to which the career belonged, and (3) Less than 25 percent of the two groups were able to identify or give requested information about two community agencies providing job placement services.
