| Abstract | The purpose of this study was to identify those skills relevant to the mastery of place-value tasks involving hundreds, tens, and ones that are difficult for primary grade children. A place-value mastery test and five diagnostic tests were written by the researcher, validated by specialists and pilot tested to improve reliability. They were then administered to 323 second-grade pupils in four schools which were chosen to provide a wide range of mathematics ability. It was found that the sample could be divided into 235 high achievers and 88 low achievers such that the mean scores of the first group were significantly higher than the second group on all tests. There was a significant relationship between the mastery tests and the diagnostic tests in both groups, but it was stronger in the group of low achievers. The subordinate skill of exchanging tens for ones, and ones for tens, and naming the same number in different ways was difficult for both groups. (MM) |
