Abstract | The purpose of the conference was to clarify fundamental problems of education in African countries and to evaluate new science curricula for primary and secondary schools. The report is divided into six parts covering a general introduction to the problem, psychological and sociological considerations in respect to pupils, the curriculum, evaluation of science education, and conference discussions and recommendations. The complete texts of papers presented are included. Significant emphasis was placed on defining objectives of science teaching for African students. There was immediate need of resolving problems arising from poor vocabulary of scientific terms in African languages. Research needs were identified in many areas, including communication patterns between parents and children and among children themselves. Recommendations were also made for collaboration with international agencies engaged in curriculum development. (PS) |
