Abstract | This document presents the report of a project designed to examine the relationship of higher education to urban society and to develop purposes and programs that the churches, community groups, institutions of higher education, and other organizations may pursue so that higher education in its various forms can be more responsive to the critical needs of urban life. The statement reflects a primary concern about the events in which campus and church interact in affecting urban society. Since other institutions, such as finance, business and government, exert enormous power in this society, the tasks of educational and religious institutions must be conceived with realism about such facts and with imagination about the forces that can shape the future. The three themes dealt with are (1) a vision for society, (2) the empowerment and the social dynamic required for people to achieve the vision, and (3) the work ahead for universities and churches in fostering that vision and that dynamic.
