AbstractThis study was undertaken to learn whether the courses offered by the Associate Degree Insurance program at North Central Technical Institute, Wausau, Wisconsin, are adequate to equip prospective employees in the insurance industry. The study was accomplished by surveying 169 insurance companies to obtain the value assigned by respondents to each course in the insurance curriculum. Detailed responses are presented in tabular and narrative form. Seventy-five percent of the responding companies stated that they would be interested in hiring the graduates of the 2-year associate degree program. However, many firms indicated that a positive attitude was more important than technical training and that they would hire the graduates because of their demonstrated interest in the insurance business rather than because of what they had learned at school. Some firms stated that they look for persons with a liberal arts background and do the training themselves. Fifty-seven percent of the respondents felt that a liberal arts graduate was preferred to the business graduate. As a result of the survey, it was recommended that a salesmanship course be added to the curriculum, as most insurance jobs involve some sort of selling. It was also recommended that contacts with the insurance companies be maintained for placement and further curriculum evaluation purposes. (MF)
