AbstractTo determine aspects of the attitudinal dimension of vocational maturity among rural disadvantaged girls and boys of eastern Kentucky, samples of Grade 8 and 12 students were administered the: (1) Vocational Development Inventory-Attitude Scale, (2) Occupational Aspiration Scale, (3) California Test of Mental Maturity and the Otis-Lennon Mental Ability Test, and (4) Student Information Form. These instruments produced usable data about sex, grade level, occupational aspiration, mental ability, employment, grade point average, educational desire, and educational expectation. Data analysis revealed that: (1) There was no difference between mean scores of girls (35.30) and boys (34.37) on the measure of vocational attitude maturity, but there was a significant difference at the .05 level between the mean scores of those in Grade 8 (28.80) and Grade 12 (34.78) on the same measure, (2) Although girls scored higher than boys and the mean scores increased with age, the interaction effect of sex and grade level was not significant, and (3) For Grade 8 girls, measures of grade point average, mental ability, and occupational aspiration emerged as statistically significant predictors of vocational attitude maturity, while mental ability was the only significant variable in the prediction of vocational attitude maturity for Grade 12 girls as well as Grade 8 and 12 boys.
