| Abstract | This document presents the minutes of preparatory meetings to and the proceedings of a conference of rectors and vice-chancellors of the European universities held from September 2 to September 8, 1964. Some of the major addresses at the conference dealt with the topics of: (1) the university in the modern world; (2) the university and universality in Europe today; (3) the unity of the university; (4) the responsibility of the university towards society and towards itself; (5) conditions of access to the university in Europe; (6) the relationship between the university and industry; (7) problems arising from the coexistence of universities and colleges of advanced technology; and (8) the responsibility and the representation of the student body.
