AbstractThe purpose of this study was to measure the effects of the 1971 summer training program conducted for 19 vocational instructors beginning their first year in teaching without previous teaching experience and training in teacher education. Hired from business and industry because of their technical competence in their field, the program participants were compared with a control group of selected non-participant first-year instructors of similar educational background and trade experience. Two questionnaires were developed, validated, pilot tested by other instructors and administrators, and administered by means of personal interviews both to the control and to the experimental group. Data were analyzed in order to make recommendations for program improvement and to determine if the course content was suited to the needs of beginning vocational education teachers. Results indicated that: (1) Treated groups rated their own performance higher; (2) The procedures taught in the course were utilized by program participants; (3) The relevance and effectiveness of the program increased the participants' teaching effectiveness, according to the administrators employing them; and (4) Priorities varied widely among various professional groups.
