AbstractThe construction of an exploratory test dealing with concepts relevant to mathematics was required as part of the New Canadian Study. The test devised for this purpose has three sections dealing with the sorting of objects. In Sort One, 10 lines are sorted into groups of two; in Sort Two, numbers from 1 to 10 are sorted; and, in Sort Three, triangles are sorted (due to the complexity of this test, physical aid was provided for the students). These sorting tasks were designed to explore one possible way of examining divergence in a test situation. The test was administered to 5,000 students in Grades 5, 7, and 9. The tasks were not analyzed or presented as standardized tests. It is felt that they illustrate the kinds of tasks which require students to produce rather than choose an answer within a framework that can be machine recorded. Results are presented for (1) scoring, (2) validity of the acceptable sorts, (3) general grade performance for all three sorting tasks; (4) general performance characteristics of the four student groups by grade (i.e., monolingual and bilingual Canadian-born and non-Canadian-born groups), and (5) general performance characteristics of male and female students by grade.
