| Abstract | The Appalachian Regional Commission was set up to promote the overall development of the Appalachian region through a phased series of public investments. This report focuses on what has been accomplished by the Commission in the 1971 fiscal year. It gives a general accounting of how funds have been used and how the program is financed. The Commission's organization, development strategy, revenue sharing, and the States' responsibilities and plans are discussed. An assessment of Appalachia, with regard to employment, income, population, and migration, is given. Programs developed by the Commission in such areas as transportation, environment, education, health, child development, youth leadership, community development, and research and planning are also discussed. The appendixes include listings of the Appalachian population, approved projects, expenditures by State, local development districts, and Appalachian research publications. (NQ) |
