Abstract | This document describes the development of a 2-year vocational-technical program in commercial fisheries designed to reduce the traditional training period for fishermen, educate and train future captains for the fishing fleets, and improve the technical and general education level of fishermen. A 72-credit curriculum was developed, three-quarters of which consisted of applied commercial fisheries coursework. All graduating students either entered the fishing industry, an associated marine industry, or continued their education. A wide range of employment opportunities were identified. Staff requirements, qualities, and potential recruitment sources were established. Laboratory facilities, including a wide range of equipment, were developed at a waterfront location and a training vessel, used as a floating laboratory, was outfitted to undertake all principal methods of commercial fishing. Recommendations were developed for establishment of future programs of a similar nature. (Author/RN) |
