Abstract | Content, classroom suggestions, and resources for preparing and motivating new young voters are the focus of this publication. The first section of the paper contains chapters on: universal suffrage (a historical and current view); whether or not public affairs should be entrusted to the people; the role of voting in a representative democracy; the role of political parties; and, practical politics. Each of these topics is followed by some suggestions of strategies and materials to use in dealing with it. The second major portion of the publication is devoted to a generously annotated list of relevant resources--institutions, books, classroom materials, and games. Throughout the paper, there is emphasis on making a relevant and realistic pitch to the new voters. (JLB) |
