Abstract | The application of new techniques of communication for the achievement of rapid progress in education, notably in the field of book development and, within its competence, in the field of space communication, are included in this report along with recommendations for action. The report deals with the role of books which, as a result of the revolution in production and distribution techniques, have become a powerful vehicle of mass communication in the development of education as understood in its broadest sense. It takes account, in particular, of the conclusions reached in the course of a series of regional meetings organized by UNESCO between 1966 and 1969 for the promotion of book production and distribution in developing countries. The report is divided into five sections: (1) Books in the world of 1970, general considerations; (2) Educational needs; (3) Meeting minimum needs; (4) Bottlenecks and (5) Conclusions and recommendations.
